Here it is, Merry Christmas. But is Mads having fun?

There always seems to be a bit of a love/hate relationship when it comes to the Christmas number one.  Over the past few years there has been a trend for it to be from the most recent winner of X Factor or Pop Idol, or a song that by the time Christmas is over, you have heard so much and is probably something you never want to hear again…until next Christmas!

Rating Christmas number ones seems to come down to a few things I have found:

•    The amount of words to remember

•    How easily/annoyingly it sticks in your head

•    Possible actions you can do to the song

•    Does it give you that Christmassy feeling

•    Most importantly, can you dance to it

Having thought about what makes a good Christmas number one, some of my favourites are those which are just good songs The Beatles or Queen.  I am one of those people who is an X Factor fan so anything from Leona Lewis always goes down well.

I would have to say the songs that came from Bob the Builder and Mr Blobby have been some of the worst Christmas number ones, mainly from the annoyance of having to hear them over and over.

It is important not to discount those songs with a Christmas feel such as Cliff Richard ‘Mistletoe and Wine’ and Band Aid ‘Do They Know it’s Christmas’, which always give a nostalgic feel to the end of the year.

As for the Christmas number one for 2008…I think it will follow the tradition of the past few years and be the next X Factor winner.  Whatever your preference, we will soon have a mixture of Christmas carols and Slade whizzing round our heads!
